POLA NEGATIF DENGAN EMPHASIS DAN INVERSION

A.      The empathic negative

The emphatic negative adalah pola negatif yang ditekankan pada kalimat aktif atau kalimat yang tersusun.

Kita bisa menekankan not atau dengan bentuk n’t.

Contoh:

I did not take your mobile.

I didn’t take your mobile.

Kita juga dapat menggunakan at all untuk menekankan pola negatif.

Contoh:

We don’t like our news boss at all.

In no time at all, the tour was over.

Catatan: at all biasanya berada setelah klausa atau setelah frasa negatif

Ada beberapa frasa lain yang secara alami ditekankan pada pola negatif.

Contoh:

The event did not go well by any means.

I’m not in the least hungry.

Her son’s visits were far from frequent.

Kita dapat menggunakan kata absolutely sebelum no, nobody, nowhere dan sebagainya

Contoh:

There was absolutely nowhere to park.

Kita dapat menggunakan whatever atau whatsoever setelah kata nothing atau none atau setelah no+noun

Contoh:

There’s nothing whatever we can do about it.

I have no symphaty whatsoever

B.      Inversion (pembalikan) setelah frasa negatif

Frasa negatif yang dapat diletakkan di depan yaitu no, never, neither, nor, seldom, rarely, hardly,  and only.

Kata bantu should diletakan sebelum subjek you

Contoh:

Under no circumstances should you travel alone (compare: You should not travel alone under any circumstances)

Never in my life have i seen such things

Only in summer is it hot enough to  swim

Terkadang frasa not dapat diletakkan di depan

Contoh:

Not until the following Monday was i able to see a doctor

Jika kata kerja dalam simple tense, kita menggunakan kata bantu do

Contoh:

Seldom do we have any visitors. (compare: we seldom have any visitors)
